Whitney Plantation (legal name The Whitney Institute) is a non-profit museum dedicated to the history of the Whitney Plantation, which operated from 1752-1975 and produced indigo, sugar, and rice as its principal cash crops. The museum preserves over a dozen historical structures, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Whitney Plantation Historic District.

Solomon Northup’s powerful memoir is a firsthand account of injustice and the fight for freedom. As we prepare to unveil “Hope Out of Darkness,” a new statue of Northup by sculptor Wesley Wofford (@wofford_sculpture_studio), we encourage everyone to engage with Northup’s story.

Dismantling USAID is fueling human trafficking and putting millions of lives at risk.
Over 200,000 people in Southeast Asia have been trafficked into “scam compounds,” where they’re often held captive, beaten and forced to work long shifts running online fraud schemes.
The U.S. has been a key player in funding anti-trafficking efforts, providing shelter, medical care and criminal investigations. But with USAID’s funding frozen, those lifesaving efforts have been interrupted.
Julia Macher, CEO of Freedom Collaborative, warns the impact has been “instantaneous” and devastating.

📖 “The story is oppression versus the oppressed…that story translates to all cultures, all peoples, all walks of life.”
On January 8, 1811, Charles Deslondes led over 500 enslaved people in the largest slave revolt in U.S. history — the German Coast Uprising.
Marching toward New Orleans they chanted “Freedom or Death,” risking everything for liberation.
Despite the significance of the revolt, it was almost erased from history.
📍 Today, it’s memorialized at Whitney Plantation, where @WBRZ’s @destinybeasleytv and Southern University professor Jarret Luter (@mrbillyrose) visited to discuss why Black history matters.

Like many born into enslavement, Frederick Douglas

Like many born into enslavement, Frederick Douglass never knew his exact birth date.
💌 But he chose to celebrate on February 14, in honor of his mother, who called him “her ‘Little Valentine.’”
The last time they were together, she gifted him a heart-shaped “sweet cake.” He later wrote, “I was victorious, and well off for the moment; prouder, on my mother’s knee, than a king upon his throne.” 🎂
At a birthday party in 1888, Douglass reflected:
“Birthdays belong to free institutions. We, at the South, never knew them. We were born at times: harvest times, watermelon times, and generally hard times. I never knew anything about the celebration of a birthday except Washington’s birthday, and it seems a little strange to have mine celebrated. I think it is hardly safe to celebrate any man’s birthday while he lives.”
After his passing in 1895, Black schools in Washington, D.C,. began marking February 14 as Douglass Day, a tradition that soon spread to Chicago and many other cities.
